My feeling is that my cat is going to have a short life, 15 or 20 years if I take good care of him, and I’d like him to live as happily as possible. I spoil the crap out of Augustas as much as I can, and I’m not too sorry to do it. But if I’m honest about it, it would be nice to have a cat who’s a little better behaved and not such a brat on occasion.

I suppose I have the following options:

• There’s that TV show, “The Dog Whisperer” with the fellow who whips troubled canines into shape. Maybe he knows of a contemporary who could take Augustas under his wing.
• I could lock down more with discipline. People have been telling me for the near-three years I’ve had Augustas to buy a water bottle and spray him when he’s misbehaving. I’ve been meaning to do this and have been lazy, though I’ll concede one doesn’t necessarily have to be, say, Davis Dog Training to get results with animals.
• I could accept Augustas for who he is and learn to live with his quirks. Life’s too short to constantly be upset about the idiosyncratic ways of a cat. My anger over this says more about me than an innocent little guy who doesn’t know any better.
